• This movie shows real-time changes in the transcriptional behavior of the lac operon as IPTG (shown in red) is pulsed through a culture. Our ability to observe both growth and transcription in single cells relies on microfluidic technology developed by the Jun lab (the mother machine).
  • This movie shows the dynamics of cell killing for microcolonies on solid agar containing ampicillin. The cells express GFP from an rplN::GFP promoter fusion, and the media contains propidium iodide, which enters the cell and fluoresces red upon binding the DNA. Surprisingly, the killing rate drops to almost zero after a few hours.
